You may have not heard of Kruidnoten before, but they are a traditional Dutch biscuit eaten at Sinterklaas (5th December). They are spiced very similarly to Speculaas, another Dutch biscuit. Kruidnoten (spice nuts) are not to be mistaken for Pepernoten (pepper nuts). Pepernoten are square and chewy, where as Kruidnoten are round and crunchy.

In the Scandinavian tradition they are thrown to the children by Zwarte Piet, a companion of St Nicholas, and they eat them straight from the floor – but you can eat these out of a bowl or off a plate. I won’t tell.

The biscuits are generally small, crunchy, and very moreish, and go great with a big mug of hot chocolate!
